All of the color these earrings have is created in a clear oxide! Just as a soap bubble has many colors which change as the thickness of the bubble changes, these niobium earrings will show the color I choose when I form a clear oxide layer on the grey niobium shape using only electricity in a liquid bath of washing soda and water. More voltage equals thicker clear oxide which creates a different interference color. To get the Sunflower design, I cover the niobium with a clear vinyl tape, then use a scalpel to cut the outlines of the stems, leaves, petals and background. I anodize the greenish stem (the part with the highest voltage color) first, then remove more tape and color the yellow-to-pink petals next, and so on. (18k Vermeil ear wires left sterling at top, clip closed in the back.)
